According to IMD, these weather conditions are “very likely” to occur over the next three to four hours at isolated locations across the districts of Mumbai, Thane, Palghar, Raigad, Ratnagiri, Pune, and Satara. The weather bureau has urged residents in these districts to exercise caution while venturing outdoors. Commuters have been cautioned to stay alert, as reduced visibility and strong winds could lead to disruptions, particularly in coastal and low-lying regions. Mumbai City had received received 19 mm of rain, while the eastern suburbs recorded 4 mm and the western suburbs saw 5 mm, in a 24-hour period, starting Friday 8 am. Though these numbers are moderate, the intensity is expected to increase through the day. Maharashtra weather update: Several districts likely to witness very heavy rainfall, warns IMD The India Meteorological Department (IMD) on Saturday said that Maharashtra is likely to experience heavy to extremely heavy rainfall over the next few days, especially in the coastal and ghat regions. As the state braces for intense weather, the weather office has cautioned on potential damage to crops, power outages, falling trees, and traffic disruptions, especially in vulnerable regions. Farmers have been advised to harvest mature crops immediately, ensure safe storage, and avoid irrigation or pesticide application. Cattle and livestock should be sheltered securely. Citizens are urged to stay indoors during thunderstorms, avoid taking shelter under trees, and unplug electronic appliances during lightning activity.

14 June,2025 04:22 PM IST | Mumbai | mid-day online correspondentIn view of growing concerns over food safety and public health, the Maharashtra Food and Drug Administration (FDA) will take stringent action, including licence cancellations, monetary penalties, and legal proceedings, against establishments found violating food safety regulations, said FDA Commissioner Rajesh Narvekar on Friday. Addressing the media, Narvekar underlined the importance of strict compliance with food safety standards and urged all food business operators to treat it as a core responsibility. “Food safety is not merely a regulatory requirement but a critical social responsibility linked to public health,” he said. He reiterated that businesses must uphold hygiene and safety norms during all stages of food storage and handling. “All food businesses are required to follow the safety norms strictly. Violations will lead to immediate notices and necessary legal action,” warned Narvekar. Currently, Maharashtra has more than 30,000 registered food business operators. According to Narvekar, all these operators underwent food safety training last year as part of the state’s capacity-building initiative. In 2025, the FDA aims to expand this programme and train an additional one lakh operators to strengthen awareness and ensure better compliance. As reported by PTI, the FDA is targeting the training of one lakh more food handlers this year under its ongoing capacity-building efforts. To further strengthen enforcement, the FDA has recruited 189 new food safety officers, who officially joined the department on June 7. With this increased manpower, inspections of food establishments such as hotels, restaurants, and cafés are expected to increase significantly across the state. The FDA confirmed that regular inspections are already underway and that establishments found violating safety norms are being prosecuted under the Food Safety and Standards Act of 2006. In a final advisory, the department urged citizens to report cases of food adulteration or safety concerns through its helpline or the Food Safety Connect mobile application. (With PTI Inputs)

14 June,2025 02:21 PM IST | Mumbai | mid-day online correspondentThe proceedings regarding the breach of privilege involving stand-up comedian Kunal Kamra, due to his parody song aimed at Maharashtra Deputy Chief Minister Eknath Shinde, are set to commence soon, according to a senior official's statement on Saturday. During the budget session in March, BJP legislator Pravin Darekar filed a notice against the comedian and Shiv Sena (UBT) spokesperson Sushma Andhare in the state legislative council. Legislature secretary Jitendra Bhole said, "Legislative council chairperson Ram Shinde has forwarded the notice to the privilege committee headed by BJP MLC Prasad Lad," reported PTI. When contacted, Lad told PTI that the committee headed by him met to discuss the breach of privilege notice, and he had initiated the process of issuing a notice to Kamra and Andhare, as per PTI. In March, Kamra, known for his no-holds-barred stand-up comedy at the expense of politicians and celebrities, incurred the wrath of Shinde's supporters with a song targeting the Shiv Sena president. Earlier in April, the Bombay High Court on Tuesday issued notices to the Mumbai police and Shiv Sena MLA Murji Patel in connection with a plea filed by comedian Kunal Kamra seeking to quash a First Information Report (FIR) lodged against him. The FIR, registered at the Khar police station, was filed following a complaint by Patel, who alleged that Kamra referred to Maharashtra Deputy Chief Minister Eknath Shinde as a “gaddar” (traitor) during a stand-up performance. The matter was heard by a division bench comprising Justices Sarang Kotwal and S M Modak, who scheduled the next hearing for 16 April. As per PTI, Kamra has not responded in person to three summons issued by the police thus far. The FIR against Kamra has been registered under sections 353(1)(b) (statements conducing to public mischief) and 356(2) (defamation) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita. According to PTI, three other FIRs against the comedian—filed in Nashik Rural, Jalgaon, and Nandgaon (Nashik)—have now been consolidated and transferred to the Khar police station for further investigation. Kamra’s senior counsel, Navroz Seervai, informed the court that the Madras High Court had extended Kamra’s interim transit anticipatory bail until 17 April. The advocate further noted that Kamra, who has been residing in Tamil Nadu since 2021, has on three occasions offered to join the investigation via video conference, citing threats to his safety if he were to appear in person. 14 June,2025 02:15 PM IST | Mumbai | mid-day online correspondentCaptain Sumeet Sabharwal, pilot of the ill-fated Air India Flight 171, has been hailed for doing all he could, including issuing a Mayday call to the air traffic controller around 1.39 pm on June 12, to avert tragedy. Amol Yadav, former deputy chief pilot, Jet Airways, who is now a businessman, said, “When an aircraft is high in the sky, it’s possible to save more lives on the ground. For instance, if a plane is 10,000 feet above and both engines fail, it does not come down immediately. It glides for almost up to 30 miles [48.2 km]. It takes approximately five to seven minutes for the aircraft to touch the ground. This is when the pilot can take stock of the situation and turn the aircraft to the least populated area or a plain ground. In this accident, the biggest drawback was the fact that the aircraft wasn’t much higher above ground level. Even then, Captain Sabharwal, using all his experience, tried to make the descent to the least populated area available within the radius that he had. Unfortunately, some lives on the ground couldn’t be saved.” On Friday, DNA samples were collected from Captain Sabharwal’s 82-year-old father, Pushkaraj, who stays in Jal Vayu Vihar, Powai, to identify the body of the pilot. Kamla Prasad Yadav, the building’s watchman, told mid-day, “He [Captain Sabharwal] had lived in this building for a very long time. He used to often take walks with his father on the premises and have casual conversations with me about how everything was going and if I had any problems.” A neighbour added, “Whenever he left for work, which was usually in the morning, he used to tell me to check in on his father. The family must be devastated.” Leader’s tribute NCP MP Sunil Tatkare opened up about the loss of Aparna Mahadik, one of the 12 crew members who died in the mishap, who is also his younger sister’s daughter-in-law. Expressing deep sorrow, he described Mahadik as an ideal mother, wife and daughter-in-law. He added, “She always kept the family together. Aparna was a woman of bravery and open-mindedness. Her presence brought strength and warmth to those around her.” He also stated that DNA samples of Mahadik’s elder sister had been collected. Eulogising Mahadik, one of her neighbours, Advocate Vedika Chaubey said, “She always had a smile on her face and was a fitness enthusiast. Her son was studying in Delhi, while her daughter was studying here in Mumbai.” Mahadik was recently promoted to chief cabin crew and had begun flying international routes. She is survived by her husband, Amol Tatkare, also an Air India employee, and a son and daughter. At the time of the accident, Amol was in Delhi and rushed to Ahmedabad as soon as he learnt of the crash. His parents and daughter also departed their residence at Oberoi Esquire in Goregaon East. A respectful man Goregaon’s SunteckCity building, where First Officer Clive Ratanjeev Kunder lived, also wore a mournful look on Friday. “We used to often meet him while he came to play football,” said Brian Miranda, a family friend of Kunder. Shocked by their sudden loss, family members of the deceased await the arrival of Kunder’s parents from Australia. Kunder was also known to be respectful to those who were security staff at his housing complex. “He was a really good man. He used to greet us every time he saw us. What happened is terribly unfortunate,” said Mosim Khan, a watchman.
